29 June 1992
Algerian head of state, Mohamed Boudiaf, was assassinated by military officers during a public speech at the opening of a cultural center in Annaba. The incident demonstrated how the political crisis in Algeria was more than a simple contest for power between Islamists and military leaders or between religious and secular forces. Following this assassination, the High Council of State (HCS), which was an advisory body dominated by military officers, appointed Ali Kafi, who was also a member of the council, to lead the country. On July 8, only a week later, Prime Minister Ghozali resigned, and was replaced by Belaid Abdessalam. Twenty months after the coup, the country was still unable to resolve its problems. Conflict between the Islamists and the military continued. Sources: Algeria Return to Authoritarianism, January 11, 1992. Website: photius.com
