ANC calls for the dismissal of Adriaan Vlok and Magnus Malan

The African National Congress (ANC), in an emergency meeting, called for the dismissal of Law and Order Minister Adriaan Vlok and Defence Minister Magnus Malan on grounds that they are engaged in activities that exacerbate the already fragile peace process between the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and ANC. The ANC further warned that state sponsorship of Inkatha poses a grave threat to the peace process. Malan was later charged with instigating a 'dirty tricks' campaign aimed at increasing tension between the ANC and Inkatha. During this period and with implicit approval from Malan and Vlok, the South African Defence Force (SADF) covertly supported the Inkatha militants. The call for dismissal came a day after the South African government admitted that it secretly funded Inkatha to the tune of 600 000 US Dollars in recent years.
