ANC and IFP to meet over violence

20 September 1990
The African National Congress (ANC) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) announced that they would hold a meeting of the two parties in Durban, in an attempt to end the escalating violence in Natal and in the townships of the Reef. The leadership was concerned about growing political intolerance of their supporters that had spiralled into violence. The two parties felt that strategies were needed to be in place in order put to an end to 'Black on Black violence'. The high level talks were aimed at finding the main cause of violence and how to go about maintaining peace. A joint statement issued at the end of the meeting called it a historic meeting, although it looked like matters discussed were not strategies of ending violence, but more of a briefing on the violence.
