25 February 1990
In an effort to promote peace in Natal, the African National Congress (ANC) leader Nelson Mandela made a trip to Durban to speak to ANC supporters. In a peace initiative, he addressed a rally attended by over 100, 000 people in Durban, in which he called upon ANC followers to throw away their weapons. He further commended Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader and Chief Minister of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, for the role he had played in opposing apartheid. Mandela also emphasised the need for a single united stand against oppression and stressed that the ANC was the principal political movement in South Africa.
