Rosebank, Cape Town

Rosebank is a residential suburb of Cape Town, located between Mowbray and Rondebosch. The railway line from Salt River reached Rosebank on 19 December 1864. The Suburb of Rosebank is similarly Home to a number of the University of Cape Town’s Students who make use of the many blocks of flats in the Village of Rosebank. Homes here are primarily Victorian, many of which have been beautifully restored, and the original Farm house of the area, Vredenburg, lies in Rosebank. The Liesbeek River flows through Rosebank, creating a very popular green belt - loved by children and a frequent meeting place for the neighbourhood.

The Irma Stern Museum, named after the South African Artist who received International and National recognition during her lifetime, is possibly the smallest Gallery in Cape Town and Housed in the Home in which she lived. It displays her landscapes, still lifes, portraits and other variety of media. The gallery also displays other contemporary South African artists and is well worth a visit.

 

Rosebank is conveniently placed for quick access to the City of Cape Town, the University, Groote Schuur Hospital and the Rondebosch Golf Course. And you’re close to the Newlands Rugby and Cricket Grounds and the renowned Newlands brewery, one of the Oldest Commercial Breweries in South Africa and considered the ‘cradle of clear-beer brewing’ in South Africa. It lies on the Liesbeek River and was established in 1658.
