Bevil Gordon d’Urban Rudd was born on 5 October 1894 in Kimberley, Northern Cape.[i] He is the grandson of Charles Rudd, one of the founders of the De Beers diamond mining company.[ii] Bevil was educated at Saint Andrew’s College in Grahamstown.[iii] He became the first South African to win a full set of Olympic medals, for which he received a gold medal for in the 400 metres, a silver medal in the 4 X 400 metres relay, and lastly a bronze in the 800 metres.[iv] He won this hat trick of Olympic medals at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, whilst studying at the University of Oxford.[v] After completing his studies abroad, he immigrated back to South Africa, and was appointed as a sports journalist, and by 1930 he became editor of the Daily Telegraph.[vi] Bevil Rudd passed away on 2 February 1948 in Kimberley, Northern Cape.[vii]
