The African National Congress (ANC) condemns in the strongest terms the hijacking last night (Tuesday, 24 November 2009) of one of its spokespersons Ishmael Mnisi. Comrade Mnisi who is based at ANC headquarters Luthuli House is responsible for media liaison co-ordination.

The incident took place at about 8.30pm at Vampire Street`s Landros Park in Pretoria. Mnisi had just dropped off a friend and waited at his companion`s driveway when two men emerged and pointed guns at him.

Said a shocked Mnisi: "One came from the driver`s door direction and another on the passenger side. They cocked their guns and were ready to fire at me. They ordered me out of the car at gunpoint, one pointing a gun on my head. They took the ANC laptop, bank cards, wallet, money, cellphone and everything inside the car.

"One suggested that they take me with them and another refused, leading to an argument. It was at this time that I ran away as one threatened to shoot me. I am only thankful to be alive."

The hijackers fled with Mnisi`s silver three series BMW sedan registration number YBL 718 GP. The incident has been reported to the police in Centurion.

We appeal to members of the public who may have information on the incident or may have spotted the registration number to report the matter to police.

Crime fighting is one of the ANC`s key priority areas for the next five years and we are confident of efforts by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Deputy Fikile Mbalula in addressing this scourge.
