Former leader of South African Communist Party (SACP) Bram Fischer died of cancer at his brother Dr Paul Fischer's house in Bloemfontein. After news of his illness became known, liberal newspapers and political leaders embarked on an intensive campaign for his release. As a result he was put under house arrest at his brother's home in Bloemfontein until he passed away.
