River rising in the Koue Bokkeveld Mountains, (meaning Cold Buck Shrub Land Mountain Range) and flowing North West to join Voorsterivier, 15 km South of Citrusdal. The name of the river in Afrikaans and means ' the hindmost river', the River at the back. In contrast to Voorsterivier, the River in the Front. Geologically this Range of Mountains is composed of Cedarberg Sandstone, of the Cape System. It has an intriguing patterns of erosion and cracking. This Mountain is located above Prince Alfred Hamlet, North of Ceres and South-East of Citrusdal. Elevations of the Range, are an average of 1. 600 Km and there is often snow in Winter.
Winkelhaak Road, Koue Bokkeveld Pass on the Winkelhaak Road, is a 37 km gravel Farm Road which meanders through the Koue Bokkeveld North of Ceres between the many Rivers, Dams and Lakes of this Farming Area, specialising in onions and potatoes. The scenery is richly diverse with the dominance of the rugged Mountain-scape being omnipresent.
The Town of Ceres is the Administrative centre of the Witzenberg Local Municipality. Ceres is located in the Warmbokkeveld Valley about 170 km North-East of Cape Town, which is warmer than the Highlands, which is known as the Kouebokkeveld. Ceres is well-known for its fruit juices which are exported Worldwide as well as for its Winter snow and cherry picking from the "Klondyke" Farm. Ceres lies hidden away in a Valley surrounded by the Mountains of the Boland, accessed only via breathtaking Mountain Passes such as; the Theronsberg Pass of the Hex River Mountains.
Farms which produce fruit and vegetables are located on the Mountainous Plateau of the Ceres District, while in the Valley lie the Towns of Ceres and Prince Alfred’s Hamlet. The area of Ceres also extends into the Karoo, where Game Farms and bird watching are favourites amongst visitors!
