2 July 1867
Andries Abraham Stockenström le Fleur, Griqua leader (kaptyn) and visionary, was born in Herschel, CC. He was the son of Abraham le Fleur and one of the leading figures in Griqualand East. Both he and his father were extremely active in the 1890s on behalf of the Griqua who claimed that they had lost their land unfairly. In April 1898 Andries le Fleur was sentenced to fourteen years' hard labour for sedition, but was released early in 1903.
Le Fleur is also known as 'die Hervormer', the Reformer. A legendary figure, his grave is venerated among the Griqua people.
