A GLOSARY OF ARCITEKTURAL FRASES AND TIRMS
EARLY CULTURES
- The house has been man's dwelling place for many thousands of years.
- The Pharoahs built their pyramids well in advance to be sure of a place once they had pissed off.
- They started building their pyramids from the top down as this seemed to be an easier method of construction.
- The pharaoahs were put into coffins which remained uptight.
THE GRAECO-ROMAN TRADITION
- The Greeks were very three-dimensional.
- Patatagoras was a Greek philosopher.
- The (Greek) love towards conversation explains porticoes and colomades which were important features in their architecture.
- There was too much paganism involved in the Greeks and Romans.
- Secularism, extravagance and immortality were not confined to Rome.
- The Roman God of gardens was portrayed with a scythe and two large gentiles.
- Aisles were ... used as rooms for poets and profets.
- He moved his capital to Constantinopal.
- The New religion reverted to old Roman Basilicas for warship purposes.
THE MIDDLE AGES
- The Fuedal System was used in the Middle Ages.
- Medieval monasteries hoarded manuskripts.
- But now today we understand differently and the middle ages don't seem so dark.
- Byzantine mozaiks were very alive.
- The great cathedral church of St Sophia became a moslem.
- During this time man were an uneducated being.
- The Christians were accusing the Greek-cross church.
- It was covered with a splendorous church.
- Ambilatories ran on either side.
- Fanaticism were very much prominent in society from the King right down to the surf.
- The tower of Pizza was leaning over.
- The door was full of carvatures.
- Artists and scaltors were employed to decorate the inside.
- The Midieval man was a riligeous fanatic.
- The people living in the sit a bell were the support group of the mein castle.
- The outer wall construction is quete complex ... because they must accomodate for defence and waist disposal.
- The High Castle usualy has a catipalt.
THE RENAISSANCE
- The Renaissance was a Bourgioesie movement.
- Reniassance is a word meaning rebirth.
- The Renaissance in Italy was mainly because of people looking for their identity.
- The Renaissance was noted for its Humanic Philosophy.
- An enthusiasm spread throughout Europe.
- Man's anatomy came into fuller view.
- Felowsophy was studied at university.
- Educationists opened Greek chairs.
- A Proffessor ship of Greek was started at Florence.
- Bruneleski and Donatello, through archaeology discovered the maniera.
- Brunelleshi became thus acuanted with the classical orders.
- Michelangelo used his tallents.
- Michael Angello was commissioned to design his tomb.
- Michelangelo was a famous Architeckt.
- After designing the piers on which the cupola needed to rest he died. Raphael, the next to help on the design, had a Latin crossplan but he also died.
- Raphael proposed a naive - a Latin cross - but died before it could be carried out.
- At this stage he was 72 years old the Humanistic ideas were dieing away at this stage. He himself, being one of them, designed a Greek cross.
- The church was sircular in plan.
- Humanism was further killed by the introduction of printing machines.
- Often in knoblemens house the gardens were raised showing us that there was not a lot of space in cities.
BAROQUE AND ROCOCO
- Rembrandt painted "Simpson and the Lion". He also painted "The Man in the Red Turbine".
- The first half of the 16th century quickens in tempo ... as the people of that time start to get restless and move to a new revolution.
- This was expecialy true of Rococo.
- The Post Renaissance developed into Idealism with important Architects like Bramante and Michael Angelo coming to the far front.
THE MODERN MOVEMENT
- These buildings have been built as cheeply as possible.
- All functional problems were equal with none to trivial to asses.
- They used leeking flat roofs.
- Many Neo Classical buildings were executed by Hitler and his Third Reich.
- It is often said that 20th Century Germany started to get an industrial feel.
THE PAPACY AND THE CLERGY
- This was due to an almost Panic befalling the Roman Catholic Church.
- This was due to the continuous enlargement of the clergy.
- The militant nature of Pope Julius II proved to push the project into momentum.
- Humanism was exported to Rome, of course Rocking the Church of its Strong Principles.
- Things were not as previous where it all went to the church or some gready Pope.
- This gave the idea of whats inside belongs to the middle, thus putting man or the pope in the middle of a building that actually belonged to god.
- The papacy was full of transadental tyrrany.
- The church of that time had various habits. (As well as vestment interests, I suppose? Ed).
- The hipocracy of the church brought about the Counter-Reformation.
- Both popes and sometimes a third would claim to be the rightful head of the church.
GENERAL SPELINK ERRORS
- He suffered a problem of self-asteam.

- To understand their formation it is advisable to look back into history and trace their roots and organs.
- The Architects followed one on the other overlapping each other and influencing each other.
AND FINALLY, WHAT YOUR LECTURERS REALLY MEAN WHEN THEY SAY …
"It is believed that ..." I think so
"It is generally believed that ..." A couple of other guys think so too
"It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding is attained." I do not understand it
"Correct within an order of magnitude." Wrong
"It has long been known ..." I have not bothered to look up the original reference
"Of great theoretical and practical importance": It is interesting to me
"Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study": The others did not make sense and were therefore left out
"Thanks are due to Joe Bloggs for assisting with the project, and to John Burger for valuable discussions": Bloggs did the work, and Burger explained to me what it meant
"It is hoped that this study will stimulate further work in the field": This paper is not very good, but then neither are any of the others on the subject
"The primary aim of this project is ..." It wasn't originally, but these are our best results
"This book is dedicated to my parents": They paid for it
"Without their help this work would have suffered from a substantial reduction in its data base": They did all the research
"This project has had a long and chequered career": My co-author ran off with my wife and my kids won’t return any of my calls.
"For reasons not relevant to this research ..." I do not want my wife to find out
POSTSCRIPT
Over the years student essays and examination papers have thrown up their proper share of snafus and unmeant puns. I have been collecting these, on and off, for some time, and offer them for general consumption with no ulterior motive or agenda.
