Stephen Gray, SA writer and academic, is born

30 September 1941
Born in Cape Town, Steven Gray is one of South Africa’s most prolific writers. He received an M.A. in English from Cambridge University, a M. Fine Arts from the University of Iowa and from Rand Afrikaans University he received a D.Litt and D.Phil in 1978. Gray’s literature falls into a range of genres, including poetry, novels, biographies and plays. An excellent editor, he was one of the editors of the fourteen-volume anniversary edition of the works of Herman Charles Bosman from 1997 to 2006    Internationally, Gray has held fellowships in Italy and America, and was writer-in- residence at the University of Queensland in Australia. In 2007 the Department of Arts and Culture honoured Gray with a South African Literary Award for Life Time Achievement.
