Henry Okah was the leader of a terrorist group in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). The group announced its existence in 2006 and carried out attacks on oil infrastructure and foreign oil companies in the region. The group cited grievance with foreign oil companies who they viewed as exploiting the local population. Okah was arrested in Johannesburg and charged with terrorism for bombings that took place in 2010. Thirteen people were killed and more than forty injured in the bombings.  Okah had always denied being the leader of MEND and claimed to know nothing of the 2010 car bombings. Judge Neels Claassen stated that the state had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Okah was guilty and sentenced him to 24 years in prison.
