The National Party wins Western Cape local elections

The defunct National Party registered a convincing victory in all three district councils during local government elections held in Western Cape Province. The elections were closely contested between the National Party and the African National Congress at the opening stage. However, as the voting process unfolded, it became clear that National Party would emerge the winner in these elections. The initial results showed National Party leading with 73 seats and African National Congress coming behind with 41 seats. The final results put National Party at 147 seats, African National Congress 61, minority parties and independent candidates 8.
