Die Huisgenoot, oldest still existing Afrikaans magazine, appears ten months after Die Burger

20 May 1991
Huisgenoot is a weekly Afrikaans-language general interest magazine. The name Huisgenoot is Afrikaans for House Companion. The magazine was founded in 1916 as the de huisgenoot, then a monthly magazine. One of the reasons the magazine was founded was to financially support the Afrikaans newspaper, Die Burger.  It appeared just ten months after Die Burger. Today, the magazine is simply known as Huisgenoot and has been converted into a weekly magazine. It has the highest circulation figures of any South African magazine. It has also acquired two sister magazines, YOU, its English version, and Drum, which is targeted at the black market.
