One of the important political events covered by Drum journalists and photographers in the 1950s was the 1952 Defiance Campaign in Johannesburg. The Benoni unit marches into 'Freedom Square' singing 'Mayibuye Africa,' and carrying banners with caricatures of Moroka and Dadoo.
