Ancient

Very old. When we talk about ancient times, we usually talk about the period before Christ and before the fall of Rome in the year 476.

Archaeologist

Somebody who studies ancient cultures by looking at what they left behind, like pottery and bones.

Artificial

Made by man, to look like something natural.

Atmosphere

Gasses that surround a planet like the earth.

Canal

Manmade waterway.

Canvas

Heavy cloth used for sails and tents.

Cargo

Goods carried by a form of transport.

Castrate

Remove a male person or animal's sexual organs.

Common

Happening often; existing in large numbers or in many places.

Coral reef

Hard ridge in warm seas, made from the skeletons of very small sea animals that can be also be called corals.

Destination

A place to which somebody/something is going or being sent.

Domestic

Kept as a pet or to produce food.

Domesticate

Tame. If you domesticate a wild animal you tame it so that it can become a domestic animal.

Endangered

In danger of dying out as a species.

Glider

Aircraft without an engine, which floats (glides) on air.

Ignition

System that puts the fuel alight to start an engin.

Interior

Remote from the coast or frontier; inland.

Jet engine

An engine that uses the air to propel an aircraft.

Locomotive

A engine that propels itself, used to pull trains.

Luxurious

Full of luxury; not necessary for us to have but really enjoyable.

Mill

Machine for grinding something, like grain.

Modern

Using the latest technology, designs, materials, etc.

Motorise

Put a motor (engine) in something.

Nuclear power

Energy that is released through scientific processes called fission and fusion.

Pneumanic tyre      

A tyre inflated with air.

Prehistoric

From a period before events and history were written down.

Primitive

Of an early, simple stage of development.

Produce

Things that have been made or grown, especially things connected with farming.

Propel

To cause to move forward or onward.

Quantity

Amount.

Recreation

Things we do to relax or to enjoy ourselves.

Rural

In or of the countryside. The opposite is urban, which means in or of the town or city.

Steam boiler

A closed tank in which water is turned into steam.

Steer Direct.

When you steer something, you take it into the direction you want it to go.

Sustainable

The use of natural products and energy in a way that does not harm the environment.

Transport

A system for carrying people or goods from one place to another, using vehicles, roads, etc.

Technology

The application of knowledge for practical purposes.

Variety

Several different sorts of the same thing.

Yoke

Wooden bar put across the necks of two animals to hold them together.
