JOHANNESBURG - The ANC has hit back at former SABC Acting CEO Jimi Matthews after his resignation on Monday, saying they expected better conduct from him.

Matthews says his exit was brought on by the recent changes at the public broadcaster which compromised his values.

His decision was sparked by controversial decisions taken by SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

These include a ban on showing violent protests and featuring newspapers.

Many have hailed Matthews for his decision while others say it’s an outrageous act.

“We would have expected better conduct from a very seasoned journalist like Jimi," said ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa.

"He becomes part of a tool to be used to bash the SABC unfortunately. He leaves us with many questions now."

Several SABC employees, including three senior staff members, have also raised concerns about the censorship.

The concerned journalists have requested an urgent meeting with Motsoeneng.
