12 December 1962
Armed Poqo members were intercepted by the police while on their way to assassinate Chief Kaiser Matanzima. An armed clash between the police and Poqo members, led by Albert Tshweni, took place following a tip by men from Ntlonze village that their area was engulfed by strangers. When the villagers returned to their homes with the police, after taking cover in the hills for fear of being attacked by Poqo members, a standoff ensued. Tshweni's men charged at the police, resulting in the death of seven attackers with three constables seriously injured. The incident became known as the Ntlonze Hill shootings. The Poqo members who were killed were Polisa Tina, Manana Mtuta, Manyandu Moti, Nyasinile Dela, Thsonisile Skevi Daniel Nonqina, Wellington Jada and Qebele Makasa. The Pan African National Congress recorded them as eight instead of the long-held view that there were seven.
