12 October 1995
An emergency session was convened by parliament on October 12, 1995, to approve legislation to permit local elections to be held on November 1. This step was taken in compliance with legislation that was passed in September by the Constitutional Court, necessitating the holding of elections before December, 1995. The Election Task Group, responsible for organising the elections, announced that in areas where electoral boundaries had not been settled, namely KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape, the voters would not go to the polls on November 1, as disputes were still pending. It was speculated that elections in those two provinces were likely to be held on 27 March, 1996. Source: Keesing's Record of World Events, News Digest for October 1995, P 40760.
